When I looked back at my charitable giving from 2018, I felt like a fraud. Here I was, always championing my cause-orientation, my passion for doing good in the world, yet none of my charitable contributions were driven by me. I was a follower 😳. I did not choose a single nonprofit to back, and I spent no time thinking about impact. Where were all my charitable dollars going? Whenever peers would post online or send me a note, I’d give to their birthday fundraiser, 5k, or bike ride across the state 💸. I never once stopped to think about the causes I was passionate about and the impact of my dollars.
My giving pattern made me question how other people my age were allocating their own money. If I was donating mostly to peer-to-peer campaigns, what were they doing? As it turns out, my experience was the norm among millennials, who also give to unvetted crowdsourcing campaigns (like GoFundMe) much more often than other generations — all dictated by peers.
I wanted to change the nature of giving for myself and other millennials — to put us in the driver’s seat of our own giving 🛵. To be more proactive and thoughtful around giving, I needed a simple way to sort through organizations and find the ones I was passionate about. With over 1.5 million nonprofits in the U.S., I was overwhelmed with where to start 🤷♀️. I wanted a simple and easy way to discover high-impact nonprofits working on the causes I care about.
And so Millie was born. ✨
A new kind of giving. 🤲
